OK... So I thought it might be good to get a debate going here on Southview Connect. We provide some really good information on this site, (and we know we've got a good reader base), but we rarely get much interaction and response. So I want to challenge you all over the next few weeks to get "into it" with me on some of the fundamental issues we will be visiting from our new sermon series "Foundation".
First, it might be good to revisit Pastor William's sermon from last week. If you missed it, the sermon will provide you with a good lay out of where we will be going over the next few weeks, and also provide you with a better understanding of where I will be coming from.
Second, don't be afraid to question or disagree, that's what a debate is all about. We want to follow Paul's command to “test everything and hold fast to what is good” (1 Thess. 5:21). With that said...
Creation...
There's a lot out there on whether God created the universe in seven days (a literal translation of the Genesis account) or whether He created the universe over millions of years (what scholars call "Theistic Evolution"). I know we can agree that God created it all, regardless of the time factor, but what do you believe? And why do you believe it?
Check out these resources:
Also, there are many people out there that don't believe that God even exists, let alone created anything. In fact, an author, Sunsara Taylor states:
... (speaking of a Christian leader) ...also promotes the biblical story of creation as the literal truth, and denies Darwin’s theory of evolution. This, again, legitimizes a powerful and stubborn anti-rational movement that is trying to suppress both evolutionary theory and a scientific approach to the world more generally. What “common ground” can there be between the promoters and the suppressors of rational thought and science?
That's a pretty harsh statement, but Sunsara is only saying what many other people are thinking about the Christian worldview. How would argue the point that you are not part of a stubborn, anti-rational movement?
